Water Lilies

Assemble:

  1. Soil container
  2. 11 or more quarts of heavy topsoil
  3. Fertilizer tablets (8 tablets per 1/2 bushel)
  4. Pea gravel (no larger than 1/4″ dia.) or washed coarse sand

DO NOT USE COMMERCIAL POTTING MIXES

Procedure:

  1. Fill container 1/3 full
  2. Push in fertilizer tablets around the inside rim of the container
  3. Add enough soil to 1/2 full
  4. Position lily
  5. Gently add soil around roots and tamp down
  6. Keep growing crown (at top of root formation) free of soil
  7. Thoroughly saturate soil with water
  8. Cover soil with 1/2″ washed coarse sand, again keeping crown free
  9. Lower potted lily into pool to a depth of 6-18″ of water over soil surface
  10. Lilies require 2-3 weeks adjustment after planting before new growth resumes
  11. Soil and fertilizer tablets may be increased (decreased) for larger (smaller) growth
  12. Fertilize monthly from Spring throughout the growing season

Bog Plants

Assemble:

  1. Containers (flower pots, small pails, plastic pans, or tubs, depending on number of plants you are clumping together)
  2. Heavy topsoil
  3. 1 fertilizer tablet per 11 quarts of soil

DO NOT USE COMMERCIAL POTTING MIXES

Procedure:

  1. Fill container with soil
  2. Push in fertilizer tablet(s), around the inside rim of the container
  3. Plant bog plant
  4. Tamp soil firmly
  5. Cover soil with 1/2″ washed coarse sand
  6. Saturate with water
  7. Place in pond at correct water depth (adjusting with bricks if necessary)
  8. Fertilize monthly throughout the growing season
