Checklist for Opening and Closing a Fountain/Pond

“Taking Care of the Life of Your Pond”

Spring :

  • Remove fish, if applicable, and place in buckets of existing pond water.
  • Remove plants that have wintered and discard excessive debris.
  • Drain pond.
  • Scrub pond and fountain parts to remove algae and grime.
  • Vacuum up debris.
  • Fertilize pond plants.
  • Repot plants that require it.
  • Set up pump, filter, nozzle(s), lights. Replace bulbs, if necessary.
  • Refill pond and acclimatize fish.
  • Treat water to eliminate chlorides and chloramines for fish re-entry.
  • Ensure pump and nozzle(s) are operating properly.

Fall :

  • Remove pump and nozzle. Clean, bag and store for winter.
  • Remove any leaves and foreign matter from pond water.
  • Clean filtration system and store sponges and UV clarifier.
  • Remove floating plants and discard.
  • Remove water lilies and irises. Cut down and return to bottom of pond.
  • Remove underwater lights. Bag and store beside pond, if hardwired.
  • Install air bubbler and heater.
  • Install netting over fish pond to prevent leaves from entering pond.
